| An Outfitter
is someone who offers a hunting or guiding service, and is in charge of
setting up and running a hunting camp. They are qualified, licensed
operators who organize the trips, set up the camps, and work hard to
show their guests a special time.
|
 |
The Outfitters give their guests what
they pay for, by taking them into our beautiful Wyoming mountains,
for a trip to remember. An Outfitter attends trade shows throughout
the year to get his facility before the public and book guests for
the Hunting and guided trips in the fall. |
|
| The horses are
usually hauled from their summer pastures to a trail head, where
they are unloaded and then driven to the camps, or ridden and used
to pack in the camp equipment. Most of the camps in this area are
between 4 and 15 hours to get into, and it makes a long day in the
mountains and on the trails for both the horses and the wranglers.
There is a variety of horse breeds used in the guiding and hunting
service, such as Quarter Horses, Tennessee Walkers, Fox Trotters,
Morgans, mixed Appaloosa, Paso Fino, and others, and in all colors.
The string consist of their riding horses and pack
horses, with enough extras accompanying each trip to
prevent any of them from being overworked. |

Hunting, Fishing,
Photography, special rides and camp trips are all a part of what an
Outfitter offers you when you make reservations to go on his pack
trips. This picture is at the trail head, where they have
loaded the pack horses with the gear for the hunt, and have
the hunters aboard ready for the long ride into camp. The hunters
and guests come from all over the world, and usually stop in Cody
before they are transported to the trailhead. There they
are introduced to the horses that have been chosen for
them to ride on their trip into the mountains, and during
their stay in the hunting camp. |
|
| The Hunting camps are
set up in a designated area, which is determined by the ownership of
the camps and permits issued to the Outfitters. These camps are set
up for the hunting season. Each group of hunters are in camp for
several days, depending on the time they have booked for and the
animal they are hunting. Each camp will have an Outfitter, guides,
camp jack, wranglers, and a cook. These people all make up the crew
to help make your stay enjoyable. |
 |
|
 |
The camp has been set
up as you can see in the distance through the pine trees, and it is
snowing, which will make it great the next day for tracking
that special wildlife that is going to be hunted. Usually when the
storm comes in you will find everyone in camp setting around the
cook stove, visiting, telling wild stories, and waiting for that
special meal to be put on the table. Everyone talking about where
they will hunt tomorrow, what time they will get up and probably
what's for lunch. |
|
| This picture shows a
very well kept kitchen in one of the hunting camps. This will show
the cook is organized and all ready to cook that special breakfast,
make that good lunch and prepare the evening meal that will be hot
and on the table when the hunters get back into camp, after the long
day hunting, and either with the game, or anticipating the next day
to look for that special Bull Elk, or big Buck Deer. Then the cook
starts all over, for the next day. Early mornings, and late
evenings, but in the mountains and enjoying every minute of the day. |
 |

This hunter is
putting on warm gear, getting his rifle ready, and visiting
with the guide to find out just what is planned for the day hunting.
Its important to keep warm, and dry if possible, but however it
turns out they have a good day hunting and ready for a good evening
around the camp stove and telling the stories of their previous
hunts, or what happened THAT DAY. |
|
| This is the morning
after a beautiful snow, and the day they will have good snow for
tracking, the sun is shining and it will be a good day to see the
game. You can just hear the quiet, stillness in the mountain, and
feel the peace and rest that you get while you are in the beautiful
mountains with fresh air, and clear blue sky. When you get to a
camp, and unload, your gear, roll out your sleeping bag, and have
all the cloths you need to keep warm, you feel like your are in a
scene of the past. No phones, no traffic, and just the still, quiet,
snow and pine trees to keep you company. |

This is a resident
hunter with a very big smile, who is happy with this large bull elk
that he has bagged and will be ready to take home and and of course
brag at it being the biggest elk on the mountain. This is a large
bull elk with a beautiful rack that would make any hunter happy, and
very satisfied with his hunt for this season. Not only is the trophy
elk a satisfaction, but just being out in the open in the fresh air
and pine trees at the top of the mountain gives you a
great feeling. |
|
| A guest at
the Pawnee Hotel has a very satisfied, look and a big smile as
he shows off his trophy set of horns that he has taken off a large
bull elk. He will take these horns home and have them mounted as a
display to show his friends and guest what a nice hunt he had at one
of the camps above the Cody area. The elk has been taken to the
locker plant to be cut and packaged, for the trip home. The meat is
packed in dry ice to prevent spoilage, and is frozen before they
leave. |
 |
|
| The summer
trips are usually the trips that the Outfitter will take out himself. This
way he is a personal guide for the pack trips into the mountains, for
riding pleasure, photography, fishing, camping, or just taking his guest
on an outing that is restful and beautiful. A great experience for
everyone, and one you will remember forever.
